I learned this awesome little hack a long time ago from my mom (who was a horrible cook believe it or not, lol! How she knew this wonderful nugget of awesomeness I’m not quite sure but it sure has come in handy over the years!)
If you have run out of buttermilk or need an easy substitution because, dang it… you’re just not going to buy it for one recipe’s sake, then I’m you’re huckleberry!
(and if you get that reference, I love you even more now)
Ok, let’s get this show on the road…
Take 1 cup regular (cow’s) milk and add 1 Tbsp. white vinegar and stir. Allow to sit for about 5 minutes before adding it to your recipe.
Yep, that’s it! It’s THAT easy… however, if you’re out of vinegar, here’s a few more emergency hacks to put into your Mom know-it-all brain:
- 1 cup buttermilk = 1 Tablespoon lemon juice + enough milk to measure 1 cup
- 1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1 cup buttermilk = 1 and 3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar + 1 cup of milk
How to substitute Buttermilk
The simplest way to substitute buttermilk is to pour 1 Tbsp. of vinegar into a 1 cup measuring container and then fill the rest of the measuring cup with milk. Then gently stir the mixture and let it sit for about 5 minutes before adding to your recipe.
